bitch is the new black -- pt. 2

[info]zuzubailey76 already posted this, but I think you can't have too much Tina Fey on your F-list.

ETA: if the youtube video doesn't work anymore because NBC caught on, you can find the same video on NBC.com's SNL video page

bitch is the new black

I absolutely love Tina Fey right now. Anyone who saw her on SNL's Weekend Update moments ago (she's hosting) will know what I'm talking about. Hopefully someone will post it on Youtube soon...

"Some people say Hillary Clinton is a bitch. Well...they're right! [insert fantastic riffing here on how she and Amy Poehler are bitches and bitches get stuff done and women are awesome]. Get it together Ohio and Texas. Bitch is the new black!"

Unrelated ETA
Check out the trailers for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's new movie, Baby Mama, which looks incredible and hilarious:

just say no to nwa

So, I was in Colorado this weekend visiting the GF (and bringing her her cat--I miss him already) and had to endure an awfully messed-up return flight that involved me flying on four different planes and spending the night at a sketchy Days Inn in Atlanta. Obviously, this was not the original plan, but Northwest (which I am never flying again) is very trigger-happy with their flight cancellations. I swear, one snowflake falls in upstate New York and they'll cancel before any other airline. And then, inexplicably, they sent my bag to Detroit and it didn't show up until late last night. Luckily, all is now well and I am home safe and sound, if mightily exhausted. Ugg. Time for bed.

In lieu of an actual, more interesting post, I took this quiz (thanks [info]virgopoet).

Some of you may have seen this already, but, in case there I those who haven't, I thought I'd share because I just discovered it last night. And despite the fact that it made me cry (I don't usually cry, really at all, but perhaps I'm feeling a little inexplicably emotional as my birthday approaches), it's ridiculously adorable and actually kind of uplifting.

giving away babies like free ipods

Just saw Juno yesterday with my girlfriend and her mum and absolutely adored it. The first few minutes, I worried the film might overdo itself with its own quirkiness, but my fears were quickly allayed as I became hopelessly enthralled by the incredible Ellen Page (and a bevy of other exceedingly talented actors like Allison Janney, J.K. Simmons and Michael Cera; even Jennifer Garner impressed me in her role as the sentimental, slightly overbearing and barely-the-decent-side-of-desperate Vanessa). Page was truly phenomenal, striking a perfect balance in the character of Juno between wisdom beyond her years and the vital naiveta of adolescence, while also managing to embody a teenaged angst overlaid with snark and a charming wit.

winter wonderland

My friend [info]jiantonic just made a very astute observation about why us Southerners-by-upbringing/birth (and I use the term southern loosely, as some would not consider Virginia southern, per se) are much more appreciative of snow than Northerners. Snow days. I have fond childhood memories of days, sometimes even weeks, off from school--sledding with my friends down treacherous slopes, making snow angels, building forts. Of course, it wasn't all fun and games: sometimes the power went out (once, when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, a power outage at my parents' house afforded me a multiple-day sleepover with one of my close friends; maybe my parents were cold and in the dark, but I was having a grand old time). Also, snow days meant we had to make up class over other holidays (like Memorial Day), and the School Board could tack on up to something like 10 more days of school in June. But somehow none of this mattered. The sight of snow still fills me with childlike glee despite it's ubiquity where I live now.

And now that my girlfriend has safely made it back home--after her day of being stranded when the airport shut down during our mini-blizzard on Monday--I can speak freely and say that, as much as it sucked for her to be stuck here, I still found our first snowstorm of the season immeasurably beautiful. I mean, if I can still love snow after all the havoc it caused last year--ice damming, heavy roof leakage, basement flooding--then my affection must be quite deep-seated indeed.

Snow appreciation a tenuous game, though, geographically speaking. My friends who come from warmer climes (California, for example, or Georgia) do not appreciate the snow at all because they find the entire idea of being cold anathema to their general existence. Friends who grew up in places like where I live now--in the Northern US/Canada--just think of snow as something to be endured (unless they're skiers or snowboarders, but that's another story) because it afforded them no school-free pleasure as children. Perhaps you need to be from somewhere with relatively moderate weather--where the city does not keep an adequate number of snowplows on hand--to find that delicate balance of the ability to tolerate colder weather while still appreciating snow's, I don't know, snowy-ness.

Or maybe it's just me, rhapsodizing about snow on Livejournal at two in the morning. Who knows.

meme Fic, for the_girl_20 (Firefly, Kaylee/Inara)

What She Knows
Kaylee/Inara
Rated PG
1186 words
Author’s notes: For [info]the_girl_20, for the drabble/ficlet meme that I posted the beginning of this month. She asked for Kaylee/Inara fluff. I’m fairly certain this isn’t actually fluff, per se, but it is Kaylee/Inara, which is a feat unto itself. For some reason, I really struggle with Inara (which is why every Kaylee/Inara story I’ve ever tried to write until now has turned into Kaylee/River), but here you have it.

River/Kaylee, pre-slash
No spoilers, just a moment planetside
Rated G

Author’s note: For [info]fewthistle, for the drabble meme from a few weeks ago. The title is from a painting by Umberto Boccioni, though there’s little resemblance between this vignette and his painting.

Fic: Falling is Like This, part 4 (don't have a heart attack...seriously)

Don't keel over from shock. This isn't an April Fool's joke that's five months too early. The thing is, I've been thinking about this story for ages now, and I hate not finishing things, and [info]fewthistle's been more than a little pushy in a subtle and refined sort of way (and rightfully so!), and I was finally inspired this weekend to pick this up again (probably because I have a talk I'm supposed to be writing that I have to present in front of all my professors and peers on Monday. It's not done, of course. There's nothing like having another deadline to make me want to do something else.)

All that said, I definitely don't intend for it to be another two years before I post the next/final(?) installment. Also, I haven't forgotten about the three meme-fics I still owe, but I try not to look a gift muse in the mouth, so this took precedence.
For those of you who either haven't read any of this story before or have forgotten what's going on (a gap of a couple years between chapters can do that to a person), parts 1-3, as well as the more tongue-in-cheek prequel What the Easter Bunny Brings, can be found on the cross-overs page of my website.

Anyway, on to part 4:

Title: Falling is Like This (4/?)
Fandom: Law and Order (TOS/TBJ)
Pairing: Serena/Kelly
Rating: this part PG, but that will change
Word Count: 1360

Yes, it’s really under the cut. This is not a test. )

Meme Fic -- Alex-centric, for wizened_cynic

This was a little too long to post in the comment field of my last meme post (I should have known better than to actually claim I would write drabbles!), so it gets its own entry.

[info]wizened_cynic requested Alex only, preferably having to wrangle some small, irritating creature. This story is set post-"Loss", pre-"Ghost" with Alex in Witness Protection.

stupid things I do for fandom's sake (and to procrastinate)

Because I asked for a drabble/ficlet from [info]wizened_cynic and because I have a ton of work to do that I don't want to do:

The first ten five people to comment on this post get to request a drabble from me. In return, they have to post this meme in their journal. Post all fandoms you’re willing to write for. (I may do more than five if people offer some compelling suggestions.)

I can't promise instantaneous responses because I have papers I'm supposed grade, but I will write the drabbles/ficlets as expediently as possible. Also, prompts are appreciated but will not necessarily be used if I can't make them work. Please do indicate choice of fandom and/or pairing though.

Fandoms/pairings I'm willing to/can write:

* 30 Rock, Liz/Gretchen
* Firefly, River/Kaylee, Kaylee/Inara
* Law and Order: SVU, Alex/Olivia
* Charlie's Angels, Kelly/Sabrina, Kris/Kelly, Sabrina/Kris (no Jill, she bugs me)
* Murder in Suburbia, Ash/Scribbs (maybe? I'm willing to give it a shot)

* The Silence of the Lambs, Clarice/Ardelia
* Imagine Me and You, Rachel/Luce
* D.E.B.S., Lucy/Amy
* Puccini for Beginners, Allegra/Samantha, Allegra/Grace, Allegra/Philip
* The Brave One, Erica (no pairing)

I'm also willing to write crossovers within reason: make a suggestion and I'll see if I can accommodate it. And I'd be happy to write a non-pairing fic about any of the characters listed above (e.g. if you want just a Kaylee-centered drabble with no pairing).

Come on, F-list, help me procrastinate!

i'll be back

According to IMDB, the Sarah Connor Chronicles pilot is supposed to air January 14, 2008. And not only does Summer Glau of Firefly fame star in the show, but the titular character is played by Lena Headey (the adorable British actress from the lesbian romantic comedy Imagine Me and You).

God, I hope this show actually makes it past the pilot stage and that it's at least somewhat good.

kelly and bree

i'm going to call them canon fodder or canonicals, i can't decide...

...and, yes, the spelling of 'canon' with one "n" instead of two is intentional, but you're probably wondering what the hell I'm talking about. A while back, I started watching Charlie's Angels straight through from the beginning. I had always enjoyed the show, but had only seen sporadic episodes here and there. Watching the first three seasons back-to-back (actually, I'm not quite done with the third season yet--I've been holding off because I'm depressed about Kate Jackson's imminent departure) gave me a new perspective on the angels. Somehow, this continuous viewing made me both love the angels even more than I ever had and made me realize how truly inane the show is sometimes. But all that's beside the point.

I'm going to continue rambling, but there's also a fic around here somewhere, I'm sure )

Title: Losing the Game
Fandom: Charlie's Angels
Pairing: Sabrina, Sabrina/Kelly pre-slash
Summary: Sabrina has problem.
Author's Notes: This is my response to the two-part episode "Angels in Vegas" (third season) because I was tired of Sabrina always falling in love with clients/suspects and then having her heart broken. Without veering too far from canon, I wanted to investigate why Sabrina might be so drawn to doomed relationships and what she's going to do about it. And this story was the result.

ah, here it is )

friends only

Just a quick PSA: I'm switching over my journal to partially friends only. It's something I've been meaning to do for a while. I'm not un-friending anyone and all fan fiction posts will still be public. I just want to feel like the personal details of my life are bit more secure.

That is all. :-)

i'm embarrassed to even admit this...

...but I'm watching A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila right now on MTV, and I'm so not usually into reality tv, but oh. my. god. Hot lesbians. And the guys are kind of cute, too, if you like that sort of thing. A friend of mine recommended it to me, and I have to say that even though it's totally trashy, I love it!

For those of you who don't know, Tila is a bisexual model--who, incidentally, is not only hot but seems reasonably intelligent and sympathetic. The show is the typical reality fodder: 16 guys and 16 girls living together in Tila's huge mansion and competing for her "heart." I realize the concept sounds awful and it is pretty exploitative, but the women are beautiful and sweet and the guys are pretty cool for the most part. Lots of drama and lots of ass, and I'm not even going to pretend it has any intellectual value, but oh well. I'm allowed some guilty pleasures.

baby gap, part 2

For weeks now, the sequel to my first 30 Rock fic--the crackified dream-baby rambling that was So I Don't Have to Dream Alone) has been languishing on my hard drive and no amount of [info]wizened_cynic's nagging friendly encouragement has gotten me motivated to finish it. Until last night. Last night when I stayed up until 4 in the morning even though I am sick with a killer cold because this story wouldn't leave me alone. Why is it that the writing bug strikes at the most inopportune moments?

Anyway, here you go. Liz/Gretchen, the sequel. Set after the events of "The Baby Show."

And Jenna told everyone in the studio that I was looking for a sperm donor and I spent all day fending off men—and that one crazy animal trainer lady—who just see me as some body to incubate little copies of themselves, so they can propagate the world. And I am not an incubator! )

pretty ladies...pretty pictures

To amuse ourselves one night at a bar a couple weeks ago, a few of my friends and I began discussing our top five lists--as in, the top five celebrities you'd want to have a free pass to make out/sleep with, on the off chance the opportunity ever presented itself, even if you were in a relationship. This quickly devolved into a discussion about our top ten lists of hottest celebrities, a la AfterEllen.com's Hot 100 list. Later in the evening, after we'd returned to our respective houses, we all wrote up and emailed each other our lists. Of course, because I'm a dork, my list has pictures (and has eleven women instead of ten). And to further my dorkdom, I thought I'd share my list here:
